Women,
youth and other groups have been urged to explore and venture into
investment opportunities available in local administrative areas as a
rapid measure for their personal development and contribution to efforts
geared towards poverty eradication.
George Mtambalike, the local government chairman for Mogo area in Ukonga Constituency of Ilala Municipality in Dar es Salaam region, made this appeal at a fund raising get-together campaign organized to raise funds for the construction of a Roman Catholic priest residence at the Kivule Chakenge Parish.
He said there were immense opportunities in local government administrative areas that if taken up by youth and other members of society, they would be a catalyst for rapid development and breaking the bonds of poverty.
“The groups should identify and grab opportunities available within local government zones and utilise them for self-growth and for the benefit of the wider community,” he said.
Youth in the country face many challenges in sustaining their lives due to lack of employment opportunities, and due to a mentality of looking for well paying jobs while ignoring other opportunities as they fetch low pay, he told the gathering.
This way they found themselves unemployed for years and fail to fend for themselves while different opportunities and projects are available at the local government level, he stated.
He urged youths to stop depending on being employed and instead develop an attitude for creating innovative ideas as a catalyst of self-growth and community developments.
“We need youth who can display commitment to serving and improving the society and the country at large,” he declared.
He rooted for youth who can actively work for technology innovations and use their time mentoring fellow youth by sharing experience, giving advice and thoughts.
That would take the country to its peak and finally remove the gap between developing and developed countries on the basis of creating capacity, he said.
He further urged city residents to maintain peace during this crucial time when we are heading towards the general election late October.
Gerald Steven, a church fellow, said that it is about time the government thinks of priotitising the youth in employment policy “so that they can work hard and pay taxes that will help in the country development.”
“I therefore call upon the government to understand that the youth are the key economic factor for development and thus youth employment should be a priority in budget decisions,” he surmised.
