LA Galaxy pursued Frank Lampard before sealing Steven Gerrard's signature, head coach Bruce Arena has revealed.
The departing Liverpool captain, who has signed a two-year deal with the MLS outfit, is set to make his debut in July after ending an association with the club he joined as a youngster in 1987.
Lampard, meanwhile, is set to join New York City FC following a one-year loan spell with Manchester City, and Arena says the 37-year-old was a target 12 months ago before Gerrard became available.
"We recruited Frank pretty hard here, the deal was close" Arena told the Mirror.
"We talk to pretty much every single player that is interested in coming to the US and certainly when you hear Frank Lampard is willing, you're gonna have a lengthly conversation," added Arena.
"I got to know Frank and visited him in London and he's a fabulous person and player and he's really going to help football here in America. He's going to do really well.
