The
government has defended foreign employees at the Presidential Delivery
Bureau who also work for Big Results Now (BRN) initiative, saying their
skills were of an utmost value.
Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade and Marketing Janet Mbene told the National Assembly in Dodoma yesterday that the two citizens of Ethiopia and two from the neighbouring Kenya were employed at BRN after winning the transparent job interview and proved to be efficient for the job.
Mbene was responding to a supplementary question by special seat MP Susan Lyimo (Chadema) who is also the Shadow Minister for Education who wanted to know if the government did not trust graduates from Tanzania’s universities that her ministry took foreigners for the job that could be done by locals.
Lyimo had basically wanted to know why the government was allowing the shopping malls such as Nakumat and Uchumi to employ cashiers from overseas in a situation where Tanzanians are running without job.
But the Deputy Minister responded saying, the market protocols section 2(a-c) provide equal opportunity to the East Africa Community members to apply for any employment opportunity which will be advertised across the region.
He added that it is also accepted that in financial issues the owners of business are allowed to employ a person in their own trust.
In her supplementary question, Special Seats MP Eliezer Machangu (CCM) wanted to know why Nakumat and Uchumi supermarkets sell products originating from their countries but refuse to sell local brands of Azam and Konyagi.
Responding, Mbene said the government plans to increase tariffs to imported goods so as to protect local products as investors will be forced to purchase local products.
