TAA decries lack of discounts

What is all about speeding the maintenance and construction of airports countrywide is to enable every Tanzanian use air transport, the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) has declared.
TAA Director General Eng. Suleiman Suleiman stated in a commemorative address that airlines do not make reasonable discounts in travelling costs despite the fact that they make their routes in the best constructed airport, at tarmac level.

Speaking during Public Service Week activities in Dar es Salaam, Eng. Suleiman said most airports where these airlines conduct their routes are at international standards. “But we do wonder travelling costs are up,” he demanded.

The authority’s chief engineer had further reveled that there has been an increase in passengers to reach 400,000 per year, noting that raising quality of airport facilities is an incentive for airlines practicing discounts in travelling costs.

He urged responsible authorities to seek how to make such discounts more prevalent, while TAA puts efforts to make sure that all airports countrywide are at tarmac level. This is being pursued despite that the authority faces financial limitations.

TAA has already fixed tight security at all airports, he said, saying this was likely to facilitate enhanced watch against drug trafficking, intimating that “their end is right now.”

About ten airports now have international standards, making it easier for investors pick up more opportunities to invest in the country as greater investor presence raises airline competition, and thus travelling costs discounts, he further noted.

The TAA Manager Planning, Design and Evaluation, Eng. Mbila Mdemu said that currently most planes are not undertaking regular maintenance in the country’s airport hangars as it was in the past, despite that gravel and grass level prevailed in most airports.

Airfields with gravel and grass level of facility are meant for propeller planes, while tarmac facilities enable turbo aircraft. Most routes being operated are geared to turbo or jet aircraft, which has an impact in travelling costs, he added.
