Azam savour unbeaten run

Azam FC
Mainland premiership leaders Azam FC are relishing 16 match unbeaten run as they perch themselves at the summit of the standings table with 36 points.

The ice-cream makers have won ten and drew the rest of the fixtures as they open a single point lead over holders Young Africans who are breathing heavily before their neck on the title chase.

The Chamazi-based side, which replaced its English coach at the end of the first half of the season, are dubbed to have the formidable defence having conceded ten goals so far, the second lowest of all the teams in the premiership fleet.

The team falls short of five goals in their tally after amassing 29 for handsome goal difference of 19.
Coached by Cameroon’s coach Joseph Omog, the ice-cream makers look highly determined to plot title haul bid for the first time since joining the premiership berth in 2008/8 season.

The team has finished third place three times and twice runners up in the league standings, always edged out by either Simba or Young Africans, the two dominant clubs in the country.

Azam, which will be out of league action for the next two weeks owing to commitment in CAF Confederation Cup, have their next fixture against relegation-haunted Ashanti United at their Chamazi backyard two days ahead of winding up this month. The day will also see holders Young Africans who have 35 points host visiting Tanzania Prisons who are also not safe from the relegation shockwaves at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The team’s Ivorian striker Kipre Tcheche has been outstanding upfront as he works hard to maintain his form through scoring.

Otherwise, the title chase this season looks to go down the wire as teams are highly clustered on points at the top. Title contenders are many as the season has been completely different from the rest of the previous where Simba and Yanga looked dominant.

Besides Simba and Yanga who are greedy for the title season in season out, rookies Mbeya City look still in the hunt for the title despite making debut appearance in the premiership berth.

Having lost their first league match of the season to holders Yanga last weekend in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya City are marking time at the 31-point mark ahead of their next assignment against visiting Mtibwa Sugar at their Sokoine Stadium base in Mbeya on Sunday.

While title chase is fierce for four teams at the top of the log, relegation candidacy is also to static as teams have been exchanging positions at the base of the table. Five of those teams are separated by narrow number of points such that the relegation pool is wide open for any.
