Capacity Strengthening Grants for Youth-led Organizations in Africa

Capacity Strengthening Grants for Youth-led Organizations in Africa

Capacity Strengthening Grants for Youth-led Organizations in Africa; Hivos Southern African Hub aims towards an open and green society, inspired by humanist values such as freedom, dignity, responsibility and curiosity.

Hivos in partnership with SIDA and Ford Foundation manages the Regional Fund on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The Regional SRHR Fund was established in recognition of the critical need for a strategic regional response to collectively address the myriad of SRHR issues in Southern Africa with particular attention to young people and adolescents as well as to provide an opportunity for donors to coordinate their support to SRHR in the region.

The Fund currently focuses its efforts on Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR) in east and southern Africa (ESA). To do so, it supports civil society responses to a diversity of ASRHR issues that are relevant at both the national and regional levels using grant-making as the main mechanism of support. The Regional SRHR Fund seeks to support efforts that advocate for or take actions that can lead to improvements in the availability and accessibility of ASRH services and rights for young people and adolescents in the ESA with a focus on the most vulnerable and marginalized people including young women and girls.

This call for concept notes will focus on Objective

Renewable Energy Advocacy Leadership Program for future leaders

Renewable Energy Advocacy Leadership Program for future leaders
Region: East Africa
Office: Nairobi
Hours: To be discussed
Apply before: August 4, 2019

About Hivos

Hivos is an international organization that seeks new solutions to persistent global issues. With smart projects in the right places, we oppose discrimination, inequality, abuse of power and the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. Counterbalance alone, however, is not enough. Our primary focus is achieving structural change. This is why we cooperate with innovative businesses, citizens and their organizations. We share a dream with them of sustainable economies and inclusive societies.

About Project

You are creative, curious, brave, involved and willing to take action to transform yourself and the world around you.

You want to find out how the lives of millions of people can be improved through green and inclusive energy access.

You are keen to learn how to navigate and influence power structures, listen, reflect and represent the needs of a community and engage people in issues to create a better future.

Then this might be for you!

Green and Inclusive Energy is a unique program run by Hivos that aims to create advocacy leaders in the area of improved renewable energy access.

We believe that if people have affordable and reliable access to decentralised renewable energy sources, they can transform their life. There are many challenges in making this happen but the main one is creating political will and getting sufficient resources.

This is why we need more young leaders who have the skills, knowledge and attitude to advocate together with their communities to create the change needed. From 6-11 October we will bring young future leaders from Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya together in Arusha, Tanzania for a 5-day intensive course.

Details about the program

If you want to make a difference in the world, you will discover that change starts from within. And that’s where we will start. Then we will move to investigating and experiencing the economic and social benefits renewable energy access can bring, understand what is behind an advocacy campaign and provide you with the skills to master public speaking and lobbying. After the face to face training we will ask you to run an advocacy effort to practice and cement your skills and share your stories in a follow up meeting. The top participant(s) will be able to bring their advocacy to an international forum of energy and development policy makers

This program takes an action based rather than a theoretical approach as you learn best by doing and sharing. This means you will spend almost no time looking at power points or sitting behind desks.

Have we sparked your interest?

Do you fit the bill?

We are looking for individuals from Kenya and Tanzania, up to 35 years old, who:

  •       Strongly believe in making a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others.
  •       Want to (re)discover their passions and dreams.
  •       Want to discover how affordable, reliable, green and inclusive energy access can transform communities.

Are open and positive towards:

  •       Taking initiative and positive action.
  •       Uncertainty, learning, and change.
  •       Risk taking and perseverance.
  •       Care for community and spending time with others in good and bad times.

Are willing to:

  • Spend 5 days away and concentrate their attention solely on the program.
  • Bring a small challenge or problem they have observed in their community and after the course put the learning into practice by running an advocacy effort on the challenge.

Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Please send your application to eastafricajobs@hivos.org with the subject RE Advocacy Leadership Program.

Your application should consist of 1) a max. 2 page resume and 2) a max. 2 page essay on a challenge you see in your community that is connected to accessing reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.  What is the challenge you have observed in your community that you would like to address? Why would you like to address it? Do you see any relationship between the challenge and energy? What is your vision on how the community would look different if it was addressed?

Only successful applicants will be informed by the end of August.

Unique Careers That Are More Rewarding Than You Think

Unique Careers That Are More Rewarding Than You Think

A whopping 71% of American employees feel disengaged at work. When you spend roughly a third of your day in the office, disliking your job can really impact your life and overall happiness.

Luckily, you don’t have to stick with that job you hate. In fact, there are tons of unique careers that are rewarding and will get the bills paid.

Don’t believe us? Keep reading to discover eight jobs that could inspire you to make a career change.

1. Doula

It’s no secret that pregnancy and childbirth are difficult. But they can be even harder when the mother-to-be doesn’t have a strong support system.

Doulas provide professional support services during pregnancy, childbirth, and after the baby is born. During pregnancy, they may help the expectant mother create a birth plan, find a birthing location, and do research in order to help her make important decisions regarding the baby.

A doula also ensures that the birth plan is being followed during labor and can help with postpartum care, such as cooking, performing light housekeeping, offering breastfeeding advice, and watching the baby while the mother showers or takes a nap.

Helping a mother during this critical time can be extremely rewarding. And it can be even more rewarding knowing that you’re helping them to be the best mother possible through your advice and research, so their baby will grow up happy and healthy.

2. Volcanologist

Thousands of people died at Pompeii and were buried under the hot ash of a nearby volcano. A volcanologist’s job is to help ensure this doesn’t happen again.

They travel to different live and dormant volcanos, collect samples, and analyze them in a nearby lab. Their goal is to learn more about volcanos and predict when they’ll erupt. By doing this, they could potentially save nearby towns from suffering the same fate as those in Pompeii.

Not only is the idea of saving lives rewarding for many, but volcanologists also get the opportunity to travel. Volcanos can be found at some of the most interesting locations, like Iceland and Hawaii, so they can live a rewarding personal life too.

3. Ethical Hacker

Hackers are masters at finding ways to access valuable information. When they succeed, both companies and their individual clients are at risk of identity theft.

However, not all hackers are bad. Ethical hackers are employed by a company to hack into their own system. The goal is to find weak spots that other hackers may use to access secure information.

Many ethical hackers find the challenge very rewarding as they’re often pushed to think outside the box and try new hacking techniques. Of course, knowing that they’re helping to protect private information can also be satisfying.

4. Military Serviceman/Servicewoman

What could be more rewarding than protecting the freedom of fellow Americans? A military serviceman or servicewoman travels to different bases and fights on behalf of the country.

Of course, there are many different branches to choose from, including the army, navy, marines, and air force. Each has its own unique challenges, but can also be a gratifying career choice.

Servicemen and servicewomen can even get challenge coins to display and show just how proud they are of their chosen profession. You can learn more here about the history and purpose of challenge coins.

5. Video Game Tester

Do you ever wish you could skip work and play video games instead? Well, what if playing video games was your job?

A video game tester plays an important role in game development. They play games that haven’t been released yet and look for glitches and flaws. This ensures that paying customers get a game that’s in perfect working order.

And for video game lovers, nothing is more rewarding than getting to play video games for a living as well as getting access to the newest games before everyone else.

6. Art Therapist

Art is a great way to express yourself and promote creativity. An art therapist combines psychology and art to help their patients heal. Art therapy can help people work through traumas, express themselves when they can’t do it verbally, and reduce stress.

Many people find that helping others is rewarding. So, it should come as no surprise that a career which helps people heal from traumatic pasts can be extremely fulfilling.

7. Hippotherapist

Art isn’t the only therapeutic tool. A hippotherapist uses horseback riding as a therapy for those with physical disabilities. Working with horses can help them increase their balance, coordination, and strength.

Of course, it also gives riders a chance to socialize and have fun. The ability to combine helping others with an enjoyable activity makes this one rewarding career, especially for those who love horses.

8. Funeral Service Manager

The passing of a loved one is always a trying time. Oftentimes, those closest to the deceased have to put their grieving on hold while they locate the will, make funeral arrangements, and file all the necessary paperwork.

A funeral service manager can make this process a bit easier by aiding in the funeral arrangements. They often have a selection of caskets in the funeral home as well as funeral cards and urns to help the family make a decision. They’ll also help with obituary wording and day-of coordination to ensure everything goes smoothly while lowering stress for the family.

Although this isn’t a glamorous position, many funeral service managers feel good knowing that they’re helping people say their final goodbye to a loved one.
