A club in disarray: History will not look kindly on Rosell's Barcelona reign

With the team knocked off the top of La Liga for the first time in 59 rounds and in turmoil off the field, the former president's decisions may have wider-reaching consequences

In the pantheon of Barcelona figureheads, history will one day determine Sandro Rosell's legacy as a missed opportunity. An intelligent man undone by his own egocentricity, he has risked decimating the club’s position of power, all in the name of a self-written eulogy.

He is unlikely to be forgiven by the club's fans for what has been allowed to transpire. Yes, Mes que un club may represent an unfeasible idealism as football has become less a competitive sport and more of a corporate fantasy tournament. And of all of his supposed mistakes, Rosell’s Qatar contract that the Cules so loathe was an inevitable deal, executed to extract value not only at the time, but over the years ahead. Furthermore for the casual observer the trophy haul has remained plentiful, the football in the main era-defining. When given the option to deviate from the grand plan upon Pep Guardiola's departure, he chose Tito Vilanova, which, despite the unfortunate circumstances that followed, was the correct, sensible move.

But the formation of Brand Barcelona meant more capital to chase his own vision of the club, and in the process classless and ill-advised decisions were commonplace. The €600 million stadium redevelopment plan, despite the fact the current net debt is currently in excess of €330m, comes across as little more than a vanity project. The manner in which Eric Abidal was allowed to depart despite his triumphant comeback from a life-threatening illness appears all the more questionable given the Frenchman’s solid performances for Monaco. Victor Valdes’ desire to move to the same destination is at best eyebrow-raising. Thiago Alcantara’s switch to Bayern Munich represents carelessness at every turn.

previous incumbent Joan Laporta had granted the Dutchman a few months before. Cruyff vowed: “I will never return to Camp Nou as long as Rosell is president at Barcelona.”

Rosell’s motivation appeared as transparent as could be – Cruyff was a Laporta ally. The man whose influence had formulated the position of prominence from which Rosell could mount his high horse had been excommunicated. This wasn’t the new president merely exerting his influence. This was the first step towards the reimagining of Barcelona, cleansed from the irresponsible spending and lack of refinement that Laporta brought as baggage.

Laporta & Rosell’s singular vision back in 2003 seems so distant that it is almost difficult to
remember, given the claims and counter-claims since that have made their shattered partnership
irreconcilable. The union lasted until Rosell’s departure in 2005. He believed that the agenda had been changed, and claimed the board were not "independent, transparent or democratic".

The diatribes from both sides have never ceased. Laporta famously announced in his biography that
Rosell had been desperate to sell Ronaldinho to Chelsea for a fee of €100 million, and made a disputed claim relating to a commission on the deal. Rosell branded it a “total and utter falsification”, and went instantly on the offensive. He commenced legal proceedings against Laporta and the previous board for the supposed financial discrepencies. Laporta’s accountants had reported an €11m profit in 2009-10. Rosell’s Deloitte audit instead reported a €77m loss. It’s here where the parallels can be drawn with the Neymar debacle.

The Brazilian’s name was first uttered by Rosell as long ago as 2011, when he described the chase for the player as "a long-term affair". He seemed desperate to attract the defining star of his presidency and had proven influential in bringing Ronaldinho to the club in 2003, the signing that many identify as the birth of the modern Barca. But for Ronaldinho, many read Laporta, just as Messi’s development into one of the greatest players ever happened on his watch. In hindsight it seems clear that, given the down-payment, the promises and funds that exchanged hands to keep all parties happy, the transfer was over two years in the making. It appeared Rosell was going to bring in Neymar whether the team wanted or needed him. He needed his own Ronaldinho moment.

The grudges, the yearning to do things differently, led to Neymar at all costs and he has paid the price for that single-mindedness. Rosell categorically denies any wrongdoing in the handling of a transfer that is now being investigated by a Spanish judge, but the entire saga has left Barcelona in disarray. The concept of acquiring a marquee player isn't the problem - his lack of diligence that put the club's reputation in jeopardy most certainly is.

And the directionless defeat versus Valencia last Saturday was remarkable for the type of capitulation, particularly at home, that the Camp Nou hasn't bore witness to since the pre-Pep days. Against a team who have had their own turmoil this season and remain vulnerable, their loss was a spectactular one. Rosell can't be blamed for players failing to get the job done. He is, however, responsible for the catalogue of misadventures that will unquestionably have turned heads, and caused focus to be lost.

And what of Neymar himself? His name is now inextricably linked to the downfall of a Barca president. He will need to remain strong-willed and self-assured in the year that may define his entire career in order to express himself freely. Rosell is gone; it is now his cross to bear. And he has to deal with the consequences of his enormous salary being made public by his employers.

Rosell sought to set himself apart from Laporta, to create the image of a better president. But his redefined legacy, the one he was so desperate to control, will suggest otherwise.

MOURINHO:HAZARD IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD

Jose Mourinho believes Eden Hazard is the best young player in the world after he helped Chelsea record a 1-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The 23-year-old was one of several players to impress as the Blues ended City's 100 per cent home record, and Mourinho believes the Belgian attacker, in time, can emulate Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

needs to keep his feet on the ground," Mourinho told reporters. "He still has to improve but he is probably the best young player in the world with legs to go there [to the level of Messi and Ronaldo].

"Give him time, and Willian, [Andre] Schurrle, [Mohamed] Salah too. Give them time. They need good results and so this result is very important for them."

Mourinho believes his side are still evolving and learning, with Monday's victory over City an important lesson in their development, but suggested his side remain the underdogs in the race for the title.

"We are a team in evolution but this is the kind of performance that helps the team to grow up a lot. Tactically and mentally I think it was fantastic," continued the former Real Madrid boss.

"A victory is a victory but a victory against a very good team is better than against an ordinary team. This is also good for the Champions League because we have big opponents so this is a good feeling and a good experience. Today was special.

"We love the big games. When you love it maybe you feel extra-motivated. The best thing for our evolution is to play matches under pressure, to be close to the leaders, and today we came here and played against the leaders and we deserved it.

"There are two horses and a little horse - a little horse that still needs milk and work and to learn how to jump. There are two big horses and the last horse, a horse that next season can race.

"We have beaten the best team twice. In the first game we won because Fernando [Torres] was bright; now we won because we were the best team."

Thiago: Bayern is not same as Barca

The creative midfielder has experienced life at both clubs but sees notable differences in playing styles
Thiago Alcantara has insisted that Bayern Munich play a different type of football to Barcelona and says he has had to change his style in order to adapt.

The possession-based style of play adopted by Pep Guardiola at Bayern is often compared to that of the Spaniard's Barcelona team between 2008 and 2012, but Thiago has dismissed that comparison.

"I had to change my Barcelona-style a bit when I got here. It's a different type of football. But that's only improved me as a player," Thiago told TZ.

The 22-year-old then revealed his happiness with life in Germany following his summer move from Barca.

"Some of my former Barcelona team-mates have already visited me here. I am feeling very well here and that's what I've told them as well.

"I didn't have any expectations when I joined Bayern. I had never expected that everything would have been perfectly organised like this."

The Spain international had 185 touches of the ball during Bayern's 5-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the wekeend - breaking Bastian Schweinsteiger's Bundesliga record - but he has insisted that it is much more important to him that he is getting to understand his team-mates' movement and behaviour on the pitch.

"I don't really care about how many touches of the ball I get. What matters to me is that I understand my team-mates on the pitch.

"I am slowly starting to get to grips with how the guys are behaving in certain situations and where they want to receive the ball. That's important to me."

Rio Ferdinand still valued at Manchester United - Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes has insisted he still considers Rio Ferdinand a valuable member of his Old Trafford squad.

The former England captain has struggled with injuries this term, falling behind Jonny Evans and Phil Jones in the pecking order, making just seven Premier League appearances this season.

But with Jones and Evans doubts for Sunday's visit of bottom-of-the-table Fulham, Moyes says Ferdinand could return to the starting line-up after making just two outings in the last two months.

"Rio is back training," Moyes told reporters. "He is back and we will continue to use Rio at the right times and the right moments.

"He has made a great contribution, especially in the first half of the season. He has competition for centre half, but he is very much valued and looked at as one of the senior players here."

Moyes also revealed that Ferdinand helped him make the transition to Old Trafford after being named as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

He added: "He was a big part in helping me to settle. He helped me get my feet under the table a little bit.

Januzaj: want to be Manchester United's best player the nexts seasons

The 18-year-old only made his first-team debut at the start of the current campaign but has gone on to make 17 appearances in the Premier League, cementing his status as a key member of David Moyes' squad in the process.

After such an impressive start to his United career, Januzaj insists he wants to become the club's most important player.

"I am quite pleased with my year, I have done a lot of work and have been integrating into the first team," he told the club's official website.

"I have played games and I think there is more to come. I hope to win trophies at this club and be the best player."

When asked his views on record signing Juan Mata, Januzaj admitted he was hoping to pick up a great deal from the former Chelsea playmaker.

He added: "He is a great player and I think I am going to learn a lot from him.

"He is a technical player who is very clever. He scores goals and gives assists. We are very happy to have Mata at the club."

LOOK AT THESE SOLDIERS

It makes for a stark image. Two disheveled rows of soldiers with bright blue backpacks marked "UNICEF," which were originally meant for children.
"We are of course extremely concerned to see this flagrant abuse of UNICEF education materials by combatants," UNICEF's spokeswoman Sarah Crowe

"A large amount of UNICEF supplies — along with humanitarian supplies from other organizations as well as stores from schools and hospitals — have been looted in many locations during the conflict in South Sudan," Crowe said.
The complaint from UNICEF came after photographs like this one captured South Sudanese government soldiers wearing the "back-to-school" bags on their backs.
Photographs of the misappropriated supplies surfaced at an awkward time for the United Nations, which issued an urgent appeal for $1.27 billion in aid for South Sudan on Tuesday.
The UN is asking for money to provide "food, medicine and other lifesaving supplies" to the nearly 3.2 million people suffering from "devastating" humanitarian consequences, according to its top aid official in the country.
The ongoing conflict, which began in mid-December, has forced 900,000 from their homes and wounded thousands more.
"Livelihoods have been lost, and people's ability to move livestock to pasture, to fish or to hunt, has been severely compromised,"

Neno Fupi La Leo: " Hell Is The Other People!"

Brothers,
He says the philosopher Jean -Paul Sartre , that hell is the other , he would also agree , that the winds may be the others.
This next National Assembly on the Constitution , JK at Mbeya stressed the importance of dialogue. And that the power politics of the move is a win and not a strong argument . That in politics there is no fighting but struggle to move . I agree with JK, and even Freeman Mbowe , as quoted by the media , and he has demonstrated realize the importance of dialogue instead of violence.
And indeed, in this Constitution, we consider fighting for the fist and kuumizana , and on the basis of differences in party colors , for ideology contained room seem critical , then , there are the same and accept kuzipumzisha our minds. That we are tired of thinking. And that we have been very selfish . Hatufikiri about our country of our birth and its future. Tunajifikiria us , our groups and associations . All of the pass, while the country remains .
For forming the Constitution of the country is similar to the common farm . And why then pick one farm with hoes ? Indeed, it will be crazy , it's because they will kachopanda and reap the benefits of them all is .
And indeed, the difference of man and beast is located on thinking. Animal is guided by emotions , but they should be guided by thought. That is, he can ride the cow mother. It's just a feeling zitakazoongoza his act .
So, the man on the basic elements should not entirely guided by emotions , including fanaticism . He should think.
Otherwise , it is a fact , that social, human being can be a creature who lives in a friendly and adversarial relationships with colleagues. And in that of hostility , humans , like animals, they can compete for and even many struggles , be it money , lands , women , men, and even the shadow of a tree.
Yes, you can absolutely kuwakuta two men scrambled shade of a tree , that who has the right to stay shade . And fighting until he can appear insane will come cut it down to the tree itself . And these men were facing the sun will remain .
My argument here , that what is fundamental is that human beings are interdependent . That where there are competing for something , man , unlike the animal , he should not think too much. First Atangulize wisely.
And in any conflict, human ayape unique position in negotiations to reach consensus , and not encourage violence or fighting.
The crisis , and to seek peace , and dialogue is missing , it means the existence of a breach of the peace environment .
And as he said Shaaban Robert, the people of the Land of the verdicts , have very strange customs . Accustomed to seek the stick after snake bites .

Simba who have 30 points ahead of today’s clash might leapfrog to the third place of the league table should they post vic tory over their hosts. The Dar es Salaam giants can not move above third place on the tale as two other top-placed teams have already secured unassailable points. Samba had won their first leg match over Mtibwa Sugar by 2-0 goals at the National Stadium during the first half of the season.

Azam FC are at the summit f the table wnjoying a single-point cushion over holders Young Africans who shattered Mbeya City’s 15-match unbeaten run over the weekend in Dar es salaam.

Prisons will be making their first appearance since the second half of the season kicked off last month as their home venue was still not suitable to host premiership games.
This will be Prisons’ 14th round match while their visitors are closing on the 16th round. Middle-table positioned Coastal Union with 18 points to their collection have never posted victory in their previous two matches played so far.

Five of the relegation-haunted teams namely Mgambo JKT, Rhino Rangers, JKT Mgambo, Ashanti United and JKT Oljoro will be seeking to earn points to survival bid. The teams are separated by slim cushions of not more than two points with nine-point Mgambo JKT at the base of the premiership standings.
