One day after the National Service graduates leader
George Mgoba (28) revealed how he was tortured and abandoned his
colleagues have raised concerns and are asking the government to conduct
a free investigation on the matter.
Mgoba who was kidnapped on February 17 is currently admitted to the
Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) for treatment. His shocked colleagues
are demanding the government investigate the matter carefully and
identify what kind of substance was rubbed on him for him to lose
consciousness.
Before being transferred to MNH Mgoba was admitted to several
hospitals, specifically Tumbi Referral Hospital at Kibaha, Mnazi Mmoja
Hospital and Amana Hospital in the city.
He was called by strangers who asked him to meet them at the Mabibo
Mwisho bus stand, who then used a drug ointment for ambushing him,
torture and being left to die at Kibaha forest.
Speaking to The Guardian on Sunday yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the
deputy chairman of the group, Parali Kiwango said that what they want to
know the substance that rubbed on their colleagues and what measures
will be taken by the government to solve the case and punish the
culprits.
Kiwango said that currently they want to control and monitor when
their colleague is checked up, in order to limit the government from
hiding some information. Until now the relevant authorities have not
yet revealed what kind of drug was used upon their leader, he further
noted.
“As leaders we want to collaborate with the police force and find a
free hospital agency that will work upon the matter and identify what
kind of drug it was, without influence from the government as we have
noticed that there is something secretive taking place,” he declared.
“We have been told that checkups are conducted outside Muhimbili
National Hospital but we don’t know which hospital, if they are private
or public facilities,” he complained.
Such secrecy was clear right from Tumbi Hospital where we wanted to
take him and the police refused us to take him and lied to us that they
were taking him to Muhimbili. They took him to the central police
station for more information instead of Muhimbili Hospital.
Narrating the health status of Mgoba, the deputy chairman said that
his health is not well, but several medical samples have been taken for
further checkup.
“We are meeting today and we will provide a formal statement
concerning the whole process of some government officials hiding to say
the truth upon our demands for employment,” he stated.
Adding “we are not safe, we are calling upon Tanzanians to understand that we are demanding our rights”
Meanwhile, the Guardian on Sunday called the Dar es Salaam Special
Zone Commander Suleiman Kova for comment and he said that
investigations on the abduction, torture and abandonment to die of the
National Service graduates’ leader will involve two regions, Coast and
Dar es Salaam.
Kova said that they have agreed to a detailed investigation so that
they can get more details as the incident occurred within the regions
of Dar and Coast. He was abducted in Dar es Salaam and was being
tortured in Coast Region.
“We have already started investigations and once accomplished the public will be notified,” Commander Kova specified.
