died from a road accident that occurred at Changarawe village in Mufindi district, Iringa region, on Wednesday has risen to 50.
A total of 42 people were reported to have died after a bus they
were travelling in collided with an oncoming lorry. The bus, christened
‘Majinja Express,’ was plying between Mbeya and Dar es Saalam and had
registration numbers T 438 CDE.
Addressing journalists here yesterday, the Iringa Regional
Commissioner, Amina Msenza, said the number of identified bodies was
17.
She said 14 bodies were taken for burial by their relatives while ten were still at thee Iringa regional hospital.
According to Masenza, the bus had 49 passengers, including the
driver and conductor. She mentioned those injured as Domnick Shauri,
Fadhili Kalenga, Elius Mwakapale and Nehemia Mbugi. Others are Mustafa
Ramadhani, Tito Kyando, Mamba Impyan, Martin Haule and Osward Mwinuka.
Meanwhile, NCCR-Mageuzi National Chairman, James Mbatia, said
responsible authorities and the Minister for Transport should be held
accountable since the accident resulted from poor road infrastructure.
The Iringa Regional Police Commander, Ramadhani Mungi, told The
Guardian over the telephone that efforts to remove the two vehicles from
the road were still going on. He said they were yet to identify the
type of cargo that was carried by the lorry with registration number T
689 APJ.
