The deputy minister of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Angela Kairuki
This was said in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday by the deputy minister of
Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Angela Kairuki. She
was addressing a roundtable discussion of young and emerging women
leaders.
Dubbed “Women Rising: Becoming the next Generation of Women
Leaders,” it was organized by Uongozi Institute in collaboration with
the Women Fund Tanzania.
The deputy minister said it was true that putting women in various
leadership positions in both the private and public sector helps a lot
in speeding up the development of an organisation or sector.
According to her, public and private companies that perform well
financially have the greatest number of women in leadership roles.
She said most women leaders are truthful, do not entertain
corruption and work hard to ensure that they fulfill their obligations
to the latter.
“Because of that, we are working to ensure that at least 30 percent
of women are represented in all sectors and various boards,” she
declared, continuing:
“We have seen a lot of examples from headmistresses and
headteachers in primary schools, Members of Parliament, ministers and
very many women leaders in the private sector. They really work hard and
never entertain laziness and/or corruption.”
Indeed, the number and percentage of women in the highest echelons
of corporations, including board levels, have remained constant, she
said.
Kairuki was of the view that women still faced challenges in moving to senior positions in corporations.
She requested the participants to get inspired, discover strategies
for inspiring those around them and evolving new connections with
fellow leaders.
For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Uongozi Institute,
Joseph Semboja, advised women who dream of taking up leadership
positions to register themselves through the Women Fund Tanzania.
He said the Uongozi Institute would help them all the way, including training and mentorship until they achieve their dreams.
“I urge more women to come out and vie for leadership positions in
various areas, be it in politics or offices, for we are here to support
them,” said Dr Semboja.
