Former PM Sir John Major has hit out at the "squalid" and "deceitful" campaign to get Britain out of the EU.
He
told Andrew Marr he was "angry about the way the British people are
being misled" by fellow Conservative Boris Johnson and Vote Leave.
He urged Mr Johnson to stop putting out information on immigration and the NHS which he knew to be false.
Mr Johnson stood by Vote Leave's figures and called for an end to "blue-on-blue" conflict.
Former Labour deputy leader Lord
Prescott tells the BBC his party was not making the pro-EU case
forcefully enough and was merely "in the background" of Tory infighting
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he was touring the country and generating "interested" crowds
Sir John - a leading member of the Remain campaign - described
Mr Johnson as a "court jester," who he suggested might not have the
loyalty of Conservative MPs if he went on to become leader of a party he
had "divided".
He insisted he was not making a personal attack
on the former London mayor but on the Vote Leave campaign as a whole,
saying: "They are misleading people to an extraordinary extent".
'Hungry python'
"They are feeding out to the British people a whole galaxy of inaccurate and frankly untrue information.
"And what they have not done is tell us what would be the position if we were to vote to leave," he told Andrew Marr.
He
said Vote Leave had lost the economic argument and were now "veering"
towards immigration, where "their campaign is verging on the squalid".
Analysis
By Chris Mason, BBC political correspondent
Grey. Dull. Boring.
Indeed,
the bloke Spitting Image caricatured as being so boring, they did a
skit of Sir John and his wife Norma eating peas, while having an
incredibly boring conversation.
But there wasn't anything boring about the former prime minister's interview this morning.
I
present you with eight words he used to describe the Leave campaign:
Fundamentally dishonest. Squalid. Frankly fatuous. A deceit. Misled.
So
spoke a politician whose time as prime minister was defined by a chasm
within his party over Europe; a chasm he helped widen today.
His
incendiary remarks about the NHS and what he saw as the malign intent of
Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Gove, won't be forgotten
quickly.
Remember, all four men are in the same party.
And whatever happens on June 23rd, that same party, the Conservatives, will still have to govern.
He
predicted "chaos" if Britain voted to leave in 23 June's referendum and
claimed Britain would lose a "huge amount national income" through
trade with Europe, adding: "These promises of expenditure on the
National Health Service and elsewhere are frankly fatuous, they are a
deceit."
He claimed the NHS would be "about as safe" in the hands
of Mr Johnson, Justice Secretary Mr Gove and former Cabinet minister
Iain Duncan Smith as a "pet hamster would be with a hungry python".
And
he suggested Mr Johnson knew Britain's contribution to the EU, after a
rebate and money back for farmers, was "about one third" of the £350m
claimed on the side of his Vote Leave battle bus.

Media captionBoris Johnson: "My view about the EU has changed, but that's because the EU has changed"He said he feared the British people could vote to leave on
the basis of "inaccurate information known to be inaccurate", which he
regarded as "deceitful".
But Mr Johnson told Marr the £350m figure
was a "reasonable" one, arguing that, although some of it was returned
by the EU, "this is money we cannot control," adding it could be spent
on the NHS or other "one nation" priorities in the event of a Brexit.
He
said Vote Leave was setting out "an agenda for the government to take
back control" after leaving the EU - and the Remain campaign had no
"long-term vision for the economy" if immigration continued at its
current rate.
He predicted the UK's population could rise "inexorably", potentially as high as 80 million.
'Frustrating'
Sir
John also attacked Vote Leave's "depressing and awful" arguments on
immigration, including the suggestion that 88 million Turkish people
could "flood" into the UK if Turkey was given the right to join the EU.
"Turkey
will not be in the European Union for a very, very long time, if ever,
and the Leave campaign know that. That's the point - they know that," he
said.
Mr Johnson hit back, saying: "Frankly, I don't mind whether Turkey joins the EU, provided the UK leaves the EU".
Pressed
on his previous support for Turkey joining the EU, he said "that was
back in the days when some of us thought that widening the EU would not
mean this federalising, centralising, deepening process that we have
seen".
"The EU has changed out of all recognition since people like me first started advocating Turkish membership," he added.
Quizzed
by Andrew Marr about a new Vote Leave poster saying David Cameron could
not be trusted on immigration, Mr Johnson said it was "frustrating" the
government was not meeting its manifesto commitment to reduce annual
net migration to the "tens of thousands".
Michael Gove also said on Sunday that leaving the EU would allow the UK to get net migration under 100,000 - a promise he said PM David Cameron had not been able to keep.
Image caption
David Davis said the public did not like personal attacks
Mr Johnson said he had hoped Mr Cameron could
address this in his EU renegotiation, but that the PM "didn't get a
sausage" from Brussels.
He also said it was "absolute nonsense" that he was backing Brexit out of personal leadership ambitions.
"Obviously there is going to be a temptation by one side or the other to try to turn it into a personality-driven conversation.
"My view about the EU has changed but that is because the EU has changed out of all recognition."
'Harsh' attacks
The Vote Leave campaign accused Sir John of resorting to "name calling" rather than "a serious debate about the issues".
Conservative
MP David Davis said Sir John had been sent out by Number 10 to "reduce
the credibility of the Leave campaign's claims" but the figures he was
"bandying about" on the Marr show were not accurate in themselves.
He said Sir John's personal attacks on Mr Johnson and other Vote Leave figures were "harsh" and "I don't think very wise".
"I
don't think the public like it. After 23 June we've got to pull the
party together, make it work and with that sort of attack it's a very
bad idea," he told the BBC's Sunday Politics.
Meanwhile, Labour
leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on Vote Leave to say which EU
regulations would "burn first" if Britain votes to leave.
Addressing
the GMB union conference, Mr Corbyn said campaigners had promised a
"bonfire of regulations" the day after the referendum.
England failed to progress from the group stage of the 2014 World Cup
England will never again win another major tournament.
Regardless
of the collective talents of the 23 men assembled by Roy Hodgson or his
successors, England will always be undermined by the following:
the amount of domestic football played in England
the intensity of the Premier League
the lack of a winter break
all of the above.
Indeed, these excuses have been trotted out so often - Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello were particularly fond of them - that they have almost become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
But is there a shred of truth to them?
Analysing
data in relation to games and minutes played in club football this
season, intensity of play and injuries suffered, we compared the current
England squad to the major sides at the European Championship and the
other home nations.
Even before a ball is kicked, do England already have an excuse?
Do England play more than their rivals?
It
is a popular assumption that players who ply their trade in England get
through more work in a domestic season than those in the leagues across
Europe.
However, when it comes to the squads for Euro 2016, that is simply not true.
England
lag behind Spain and France when it comes to both average number of
games and minutes played in the 2015-16 season and stack up very
similarly to Germany.
Indeed, when it comes to comparing Hodgson's
men to the defending champions, Spain's 23-man squad averages five
games and almost 300 minutes more than England's.
There are some mitigating circumstances. Jack Wilshere, who missed almost the entire season,
drags England's averages down but, even if the Arsenal midfielder had
played a full campaign, England would still be behind Spain and France.
As
it is, of the teams analysed, England's workload is greater than Italy,
Wales and Northern Ireland's, but, in the case of the latter two, their
squad includes more players who are not first-team regulars for their
clubs.
What about individuals?
The
Premier League does, however, provide the three individuals to have
played the most football this season from the nations analysed.
Manchester
United pair Chris Smalling and Anthony Martial and Liverpool defender
Nathaniel Clyne have completed the most domestic minutes on the field.
However,
the difference in workload between the players at top of the list is
minimal, so it is perhaps better to look at trends within squads.
Here, England's players are once again shown not to get through more work than their rivals.
Of Hodgson's men, 13 have played 40 or more games, compared to 18 in the Spain squad and 13 each from France and Germany.
The
Spanish total could be explained by three La Liga teams - Real Madrid,
Atletico Madrid and Sevilla - making European finals and the fact that
Barcelona, with other international commitments, played more games than
any other team on the continent last season.
Still, those clubs were not involved in the sort of squad rotation that saw Liverpool, the other team to reach a European final, field virtually two different XIs in the Premier League and Europa League by the end of the season.
"There
certainly is a culture of resting players in La Liga, with the question
of possible 'rotaciones' always raised before every Barcelona and Real
Madrid game," said Spanish football journalist Andy West.
"But
perhaps a subtle difference is that squad rotations in Spain are
generally carried out on a more selective basis, with only two or three
changes made to a team rather than six or seven."
But isn't the Premier League more intense?
Even
if England's players do play less than their rivals, the notion that
the Premier League, and even the Championship, are more physically
demanding could negate the advantages of not spending as much time on
the pitch.
This theory holds water, but only to a certain extent.
Performance analysts ProZone
have studied the major leagues in Europe - the top flights of England,
France, Germany, Spain and Italy - and provided evidence that the
Premier League could be more physically demanding.
For instance,
teams moving the ball quickly from one player to another, known as fast
tempo possessions, are 20% higher in the Premier League than the
European average.
"In 2015-16 the English Premier League was
characterised by a much higher propensity for fast tempo and sustained
offensive possessions when compared with the other major European
leagues," said ProZone head of performance lab Paul Neilson.
"This
data could support the view that the speed of the game in England is
faster compared to other competitions, which may also link to higher
physical demands and speed of decision-making."
However, when it comes to counter-attacking, the Premier League is 16% down on the European average.
"Many
people associate counter-attacks with high physical demands," Neilson
said. "However, it might also indicate the tactical importance within
the Premier League of possession and not being caught out in transition -
although this did not stop Leicester City exploiting this tactic very
well."
Conclusion? Inconclusive.
Even if we were to take the leap that the Premier League is more
physically demanding than the rest of Europe, then we should also
remember the effect that has on the rest of the teams at Euro 2016. The Premier League is supplying 103 players to the tournament, some 81 who are not in the England squad.
"So
many players from other nations at Euro 2016 play in the Premier League
anyway," said former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas. "Some of the
top players too.
"Cristiano Ronaldo was with Manchester United for a number of years and he was still doing it for Portugal.
"N'Golo
Kante has been playing the way he does week in, week out for Leicester
all year but he does not look tired because he obviously trains hard and
looks after himself. Him doing that for France won't be an issue."
What about the winter break?
The list of names who have called for a winter break in English football reads like a who's who of imported managers.
Among
them are Arsene Wenger, Louis van Gaal, Jurgen Klopp, not to mention
former national team bosses Capello and Eriksson, with the latter going
so far as to say that England will struggle to win a tournament until
one is introduced.
While the intention here is not dismiss the
positive effect a winter break may have on the collective freshness of
the England squad in France, it can perhaps be demonstrated that
Hodgson's squad are not so disadvantaged by the Premier League's refusal
to fall in line with much of Europe.
Firstly, the Premier League
and Championship are supplying almost a quarter of the players to the
tournament. Straight away, the England squad are on a par with the other
111 men not to have taken a break this season.
In terms of breaks taken by leagues across Europe, the hiatus of the Spanish top flight was cut to 10 days this season, about the same amount of time a Premier League team gets off if they fail to reach the fourth or fifth round of the FA Cup.
Also, consider this. If we are to take a typical winter break in Europe to last for around three weeks, then, according to physioroom.com, nine of the England squad have had the same amount of rest this season through the time they have spent out injured.
Sven-Goran Eriksson led England to three consecutive major tournament quarter-finalsTaking
all breaks - scheduled and injury-enforced - into account, then 14 of
the England squad have gone without a period of rest, a number not
dramatically greater than the nine players in the France squad in a
similar situation.
"A period of injury can be more restful than
being fully fit," said injury data analyst Ben Dinnery. "Not only
because of the physical demands of the Premier League, but also the
psychological aspect, travel, training and recovery, especially when
there are two or three games a week.
"However, it's not as simple
as saying an injury is as good as a break, it depends on the player and
the type of injury sustained.
"Some players could work harder
trying to get fit than they do when they are playing regularly, maybe
doing two or three sessions a day."
What do the players think?
Even
if some evidence suggests that England have no more reason to be
fatigued at a major tournament that their rivals, the popular belief
that they should be at a disadvantage is likely to remain.
"If you
keep telling players they are tired, they will be tired," said former
England striker Alan Shearer, who played in the European Championships
of 1996 and 2000, as well as the 1998 World Cup.
"I didn't go into
any tournament feeling tired, in fact I would actually say I always
felt great. I would never use the excuse of being tired if I didn't play
well."
To support Shearer's view, Smalling, the most worked man
in our analysis, is not feeling any sense of fatigue before what will be
his first appearance at a European Championship.
"When you get on a roll of games, you just want to keep going and I want to contribute to a successful summer," he said.
"When
you've looked forward to something all season, you can't be tired when
you've got such a massive carrot at the end of it. Now it's getting to
the stage where the excitement will drive you through any tiredness."
Still,
if the scheduling and demands of domestic football do ultimately leave
England at a disadvantage when compared to the rest of Europe, they can
take inspiration from the Denmark team of 1992.
While the story of
the Danes lifting the trophy after being summoned as a late replacement
for Yugoslavia is well known, what is not often documented is their own
domestic season prior to the glory in Sweden.
A restructuring
meant the Danish top flight played a season in the summer of 1991 and
immediately followed that with another campaign in 1991-92. More than
half of the squad effectively played a season and a half before going on
to be crowned European champions.
Sometimes, there really are no excuses.

Media captionUnder the plan each citizen would have received an equal monthly payment, regardless of their circumstances
Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to introduce a guaranteed basic income for all.
Final results from Sunday's referendum showed that nearly 77% opposed the plan, with only 23% backing it.
The proposal had called for adults to be paid an unconditional monthly income, whether they worked or not.
The
supporters camp had suggested a monthly income of 2,500 Swiss francs
(£1,755; $2,555) for adults and also SFr625 for each child.
The
amounts reflected the high cost of living in Switzerland. It is not
clear how the plan would have affected people on higher salaries.
The supporters had also argued that since work was increasingly automated, fewer jobs were available for workers.
Switzerland is the first country to hold such a vote.

Supporters of a basic income last month launched a giant poster campaign
There was little support among Swiss politicians for
the idea and not a single parliamentary party came out in favour, but
the proposal gathered more than 100,000 signatures and was therefore put
to the vote under the Swiss popular initiative system.
Critics of the measure said that disconnecting the link between work done and money earned would have been bad for society.
But Che Wagner from the campaign group Basic Income Switzerland, argued before the vote that it would not be money for nothing.
"In
Switzerland over 50% of total work that is done is unpaid. It's care
work, it's at home, it's in different communities, so that work would be
more valued with a basic income."

A constitutional amendment by initiative not only requires a majority public vote but a majority of cantons must also approve it
Differs from the mandatory referendum, which is called by parliament and does not need public signatures
Meanwhile, Luzi Stamm, a member of parliament for the right-wing Swiss People's Party, opposed the idea.
"Theoretically,
if Switzerland were an island, the answer is yes. But with open
borders, it's a total impossibility, especially for Switzerland, with a
high living standard," he said.
"If you would offer every
individual a Swiss amount of money, you would have billions of people
who would try to move into Switzerland."
The wording on the
initiative was vague, asking for a constitutional change to "guarantee
the introduction of an unconditional basic income" but with no mention
of amounts.
The idea is also under consideration elsewhere. In Finland, the government is considering a trial to give basic income to about 8,000 people from low-income groups.
And in the Dutch city of Utrecht is also developing a pilot project which will begin in January 2017.
Another four issues were on the Swiss ballot on Sunday.

Amir was released from Portland Prison in Dorset in February 2012 after serving half of a six-month sentence
Fast bowler Mohammad Amir has been named in Pakistan's squad for the Test series in England starting next month.
It marks a first Test call-up for Amir, 24, since he was banned and imprisoned for spot-fixing at Lord's in 2010.
His five-year ban ended in September 2015 and he was named in Pakistan's limited-overs squads earlier this year.
The
four-Test series begins on 14 July. Pakistan's squads for five one-day
internationals and a one-off Twenty20 will be announced at a later date.
Left-armer Amir is waiting to learn if he will be granted a visa to enter the UK.
If
selected for the opening match, it will mean a first return to Lord's
for Amir since his part in a conspiracy to bowl deliberate no-balls
against England in a match there in August 2010.
Amir, Salman Butt
and Mohammad Asif were found guilty of arranging deliberate no-balls in
return for money. The three each received a custodial sentence and a
ban.
Mohammad Hafeez was also selected, subject to his full
recovery from a knee injury sustained two months ago, but there was no
place for fellow opener Ahmed Shehzad.
Pakistan arrive in England
later this month before holding a training camp in Hampshire. Their
first warm-up match starts on 3 July, against Somerset. Pakistan Test squad: Misbah-ul-Haq

Waziri
kulitekeleza huku wengine wakilazimika kuitisha harambee ili kuomba
wananchi wachangie.
Akizungumza
siku zilizobaki kuhakikisha wanatekeleza,” alisema.
Alisema
zipo wilaya zilizofanikiwa kutekeleza agizo hilo huku baadhi ya mikoa
Kuhusu
wawekezaji Simbachawene alisema wawekezaji wanalazimika kutengeneza
Alisema
Serikali haitahusika iwapo wananchi watakataa ardhi yao isiwekezwe
“Kitu
pekee ambacho huwa kinawaudhi wananchi ni pale wanapoona raslimali zao
haziwanufaishi, na hata hao wawekezaji wakiondoka huwa wanaacha
uharibifu mkubwa wa mazingira, ndiyo maana Serikali tunalazimika
kuwataka wawekezaji kuhakikisha uhusiano baina yao na wananchi
unaimarika,” alisema.
Mtafiti
kitendo cha wapinzani kudai Rais Magufuli hawatendei haki wananchi,
Alisema
wapo wanasiasa wanaodai Rais Magufuli hawatendei haki wananchi,
Aidha,
Mrema alisema ana uhakika endapo Dk.
imekuwa ikikandamiza haki hapa nchini.
Hata
bungeni kuongoza kikao wamekuwa wakitoka ukumbini.
Spika
kumng’oa madarakani Naibu Spika.
Hoja
