District Resident Magistrate Court in Tabora Region has sentenced one
Masdanja Mwinamila (44) a resident of Ugembe village to 10 years
imprisonment after finding him guilty of an attempt to sell her sister’s
child with albinism.
Magistrate Salad Nana said the accused had pleaded guilty to the offence in what was an apparent rare occasions in such cases.
Earlier, the prosecution had alleged that on Monday evening the accused who is a peasant at Ugembe village was arrested following a tip that he was looking for a customer who could buy Margreth Hamisi (6).
The prosecutor asked the court to impose severe penalty on the accused to serve a lesson to others dealing with the brutal business.
But the accused pleaded for leniency in vain, saying he was an HIV/AIDS patient who had quite a number of dependents in his family.
The verdict comes three days before the Civic United Front (CUF) Chairman Pro Ibrahim Lipumba challenged the president into signing death sentences on albino killers, while responding to the CEOrt 2015 presidential aspirants debate on Thursday.
In his fight for imposition of harsh sentences to albino killers, Lipumba was backed by other aspirants including the national leader for the new opposition party, Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT) Wazalendo, Zitto Kabwe.
Kabwe said such a situation involves the participation of every citizen and ensure that people with albinism are protected, adding, “they should not be left to stay in isolation, but housed in homes where they can mingle with various other people while at the same time increasing security over them”.
